Europe's Largest Surviving Napoleonic Fortress

 

Fort Amherst is Britain's best surviving example of a Napoleonic Fortress and is of international historical importance.

Its principle purpose was to protect the former Royal Dockyard at Chatham from a land based attack. 

The original defences, over 3 kilometres in length, totally enclosed the Dockyard and the village of Brompton. 

Today Fort Amherst still has an important role to play as it forms a major part of Chatham's bid for World Heritage Site status. 

Over 300 years of military history await your exploration.

Our " Caveyard Cafe " is open to visitors and non-visitors of the Fort

Monday to Friday 10 am to 4pm with last food service at 3pm

Ample free parking for customers

Offering a wide selection of home made food using only fresh ingredients and prepared to order on the premises.

Our homemade cakes are renowned and our seasonal fruit pies are made with fruit from our own trees and bushes.
