Film Production at Fort Amherst

Over the years, film production companies have found Fort Amherst to be the perfect location providing underground scenery that would cost thousands to build. Below are just some of the major films and companies that have enjoyed the facilities of the Fort.

If you would like to hire the Fort and its tunnels for film work, contact the Fort on 01634 847747.

The MISSION

This epic tale of a Mission in the South American Jungle was nearing completion, when the film company Warner Brothers, needed to re-shoot some vital scenes with Robert DeNiro. The Fort's Tunnels were hired and with the aid of lamps and scenery, parts of the Upper Sallyport were converted to look like a South American dwelling. After a week on location, using the Fort exclusively, the film company achieved their vital sequence. The Fort can be recognised in the film as the only brick built background, every other building is made of stone.

The SAINT

This major feature film is based on the popular TV series, and starred Val Kilmer. Paramount Pictures visited Fort Amherst looking for a location for their Kremlin Bunker scene. They took just a few steps into the Fort's tunnels before they said, "This is the perfect place for us" Exclusive use of the tunnels was handed over to Paramount, and before long the Car park was full of trailers, mobile catering buses, equipment vans and luxury campers. After building the Kremlin Bunker, (using some of the Fort's own ARP equipment!!), Val Kilmer and Elizabeth Shue arrived for two days shooting. The Fort can be recognised in the film as the dry tunnels under the 'Kremlin' and the bunker where Val Kilmer obtains a map of the tunnels to lead him to the Embassy.

TV Filming

Every year TV companies make use of the excellent of the facilities at Fort Amherst for filming. We have featured on WAR WALKS, as well as many children's programmes (TimeBus etc) and various historic programmes. The napoleonic Fort has always been associated with SHARPE'S RIFLES. However although Sean Bean and the crew of the series did visit the Fort, and many of the Fort's re-enactors took part in the series as extras, we have to report that no filming took place at the Fort.

Whether it is a large feature film or a small TV production, Fort Amherst will always provide a warm welcome to film companies. The Fort offers unique underground tunnels, ancient buildings, secluded woodland surroundings and a magical atmosphere that cannot be created inside a studio/sound stage. Call us and discuss your requirements on 01634 847747.
