Through
the gun port doors you will see the Great Barrier Ditch which
used to run all the way down to the River Medway. The 2 arched
brick bridges spanning the ditch were built around 1890 to
replace the earlier drawbridges.
The
pit below the gun ports prevented an enemy climbing in through
the gun ports whilst the working single fireplace provided
some comfort for the gunners whilst on duty.
The
guns mounted on this floor were two 24 pounders on garrison
carriages. Both guns were capable of firing solid, chain,
bar and grape shot.
