Trees felled above the flanking galleries

Volunteers at Work

Who said history is boring ?

Here we have just one of the major clearance projects currently underway.  Undertaken entirely by Fort Amherst volunteers.

This truly is history in action ....

In temperatures of minus 4 degrees, a small army of volunteers arrived on site to undertake the clearing of undergrowth and trees from the ditches that protected the Spur Battery and Flanking Galleries from any assault by the French.

These areas have been hidden from view for many years but now; thanks to their hard work and enthusiasm, the defences can once again be appreciated.

Volunteering can literally be a family affair with children being just as important as the adults.  Several of our volunteers are families and they realise the importance not just of the Fort but also the benefit it brings to them in terms of quality time together.  A few have taken their interest in the period further by joining one of our resident re-enactment groups.

Without our volunteers, Fort Amherst would struggle to survive and we would not be able to provide greater areas for the public to enjoy.

To all of them ... we must extend our deepest thanks and gratitude!
