The
timber floored upper gun floor had a similar function to
the lower Gun Floor. The gun ports here housed lightweight
12 pounder cannon known as carronades.
The
cupboard immediately to the left of the door, housed the
tools or "sidearms" needed to operate the carronades.
The
large opening high above the two gun ports helped the dispersal
of smoke and provided additional natural light to flood
into the gun floor.
By
the steps at the far left hand corner of the Upper Gun Floor
there is an ammunition shaft which also acted as a lighting
well. It was used to bring the gun barrels into the
chamber from the upper bastions.
At
the top of the stairs, just before you step out into the
open, there is a door to your left which allowed the gun
barrels to be brought into the tunnel system and onto the
upper gun floor.
